UK Home Solar Guide 2026

Plain-English guide to home solar PV for UK homeowners in 2026 — costs, panels, batteries, EV chargers, payback and what to actually expect.

1. Introduction

This guide is a plain-English explanation of UK home solar PV in 2026, written by Steve Moran and Kieren Myler — the surveyors who founded KMM Energy Solutions. We have tried to be honest about both the good and the awkward bits of installing solar on a UK home. If you read this end-to-end you will know enough to ask the right questions of any installer (us or anyone else).

2. Is solar worth it in 2026?

For most UK homes with an unshaded south, east or west pitched roof and an annual electricity bill above £1,400, yes — solar pays back inside the warranted 25-year life of the panels, and from year 1 your electricity bill drops by £400-£1,200 on a typical 4kWp system. The question is rarely whether solar pays back; it is whether the payback period matches your timescale and your alternative uses of capital.

3. What it costs

A typical 4.3kWp domestic solar PV system fitted in 2026 costs £6,900-£8,200 supply-and-fit (VAT zero-rated). An 8.6kWp system (the realistic upper bound for most homes) costs £11,800-£13,800 fitted. 4. What size system you need

Size depends on your annual electricity consumption, your roof orientation and shading, your roof area, and your future plans. As a rough guide: a 2-3 bed semi consuming 3,000 kWh/year wants 3.4-4.3kWp. A 4-bed family home consuming 4,200 kWh/year wants 4.3-6.4kWp. A 5-bed with EV plus heat pump wants 6.4-8.6kWp. 5. Battery or no battery?

For most UK homes in 2026, yes to a battery. Self-consumption without battery is typically 38% on a typical family home (most generation happens while no-one is home); with a battery that rises to 75%+. 6. Smart Export Guarantee

Every UK electricity supplier with 150,000+ customers must offer an export tariff for solar exports. The best 2026 SEG rates are Octopus Outgoing Fixed (15p/kWh, requires Octopus import tariff), E.ON Next Export Exclusive (16.5p, requires Next Drive import), and Good Energy Solar Savings (10p, no import tie-in). 7. Solar plus EV charging

If you own an EV (or plan to within 5 years), solar plus battery plus EV charger is a near-perfect combination. Excess summer solar charges the car directly via a solar-diverting EV charger; battery covers the rest of the household evening load. Year-on-year savings versus pure grid charging: £400-£900/year on top of normal solar savings.

8. Solar plus heat pump

Solar plus heat pump (air-source or ground-source) is the gold standard for home decarbonisation, but solar covers only around 20-30% of a heat pump's electrical demand because most heat-pump consumption is winter and at night. The combined economics still work because the heat pump replaces gas (or oil) which is more expensive per kWh of heat delivered.

9. What the install actually involves

Quote → contract → DNO notification (G98 or G99 depending on size) → scaffolding (day -1) → installation (day 1-2) → MCS certification (within 10 working days) → SEG registration (within 30 working days) → first generation report. Total elapsed time from contract to live system: typically 3-6 weeks, mostly waiting on DNO notification.

10. Install day

For a typical 4kWp install: install crew arrives 08:00, scaffolding already up from day -1, panels go on the roof during the morning (2-3 hours), inverter and electrical connections in the afternoon (3-4 hours), commissioning and customer training at end of day. For a 4kWp install we are typically off site by 17:00 day 1. Battery installs add 1 day.

11. Warranties

Panels: 25-year linear performance + 12-year product warranty (tier-1 brands). Inverter: 10-12 years manufacturer warranty extendable to 20. Battery: 10 years and 80% capacity retention. Workmanship: 5-year insurance-backed (HIES / RECC). All warranties transfer with the property at sale.

12. Maintenance

Domestic solar is genuinely low-maintenance. Annual visual check, panel clean every 18-24 months, occasional MC4 connector check, inverter replacement at year 10-12. Total maintenance budget: roughly £180/year averaged over the 25-year life. See our maintenance page.

13. Realistic payback

A typical 4kWp install with 9.5kWh battery on a 4-bed family home with 28p import tariff and 75% self-consumption: payback 9-12 years. A typical 8kWp install with 13.5kWh battery on a heat-pump household with EV: payback 7-9 years. A typical 4kWp install without battery: payback 12-14 years.

14. Our verdict

In 2026, home solar PV is the strongest financial proposition it has been in over a decade for the typical UK household. The combination of stable hardware prices, zero-rated VAT through 2027, mature SEG market, and inflated grid electricity prices means most homes pay back inside the warranted life of the equipment — and most pay back within 12 years.
