Quick Answer

  • Typical size: 40–400 kWp on retail roofs + carpark canopies
  • Typical project value: £30k–£290k installed
  • Year 1 saving: 22–40% off baseline electricity bill
  • MEES 2030 ready: EPC uplift secures landlord letability
  • Multi-site rollout: Single design pattern repeated across portfolio
  • Lead time: 14–20 weeks per site; rollouts ~3 sites/month after pattern lock

Retail solar is shaped by two things: the daytime opening-hours load curve (which fits PV generation almost perfectly), and the increasing customer expectation of EV charging on retail premises. Most retail projects we design include workplace EV chargers as standard.

Where the economics actually work

System sizes for retail

Independent retail and small chains typically 30-150kWp; supermarkets and retail parks 250kWp-1MWp+; high-street single units 8-25kWp.

Customer-facing EV charging

Retail-park solar pays for itself partly through EV-charger dwell time — a 30-minute charge equals a 30-minute shopping trip. We design retail EV charging as a profit centre, not a cost.

Multi-tenant retail parks

For multi-tenant retail parks, we install a single roof system with sub-metering and a service-charge allocation that passes solar savings through to tenants pro-rata.

Refrigeration load

Supermarket refrigeration is daytime-heavy and matches solar generation. Self-consumption on a typical supermarket roof solar runs 80%+ — exceptionally high.

Case in point. A 380kWp install across a 6-unit Nottinghamshire retail park with 8 EV chargers delivered 345,000 kWh in year 1 at 84% self-consumption, with EV charger income alone contributing £18,000 in year 1 — payback 5.9 years on the net £262,000 capex.

FAQs for solar for retail buyers

Can retail tenants benefit from landlord-installed solar?
Yes — via service-charge billing. We design the metering and allocation rules so tenants pay only for the kWh they consume from the solar, at a rate below their grid alternative.
What about EV charger revenue?
Workplace and retail EV charging at 35-55p/kWh against an effective cost of 12-18p/kWh from solar+grid blend delivers a healthy margin — typically £2,000-£4,500 per charger per year.
Does solar work on supermarket flat roofs?
Yes. Ballasted east-west arrays on single-ply membrane work well — no roof penetrations, no warranty issues. Generation is around 84-88% of what a tilted south array would produce.
