Business Energy Brokering — Strategy, Not a Switching Site

KMM's energy procurement is run by Ian as an independent consultancy. The remit isn't 'find the cheapest contract today' — it's working out how your commercial energy contracts, on-site generation, storage and export strategy fit together over the next 3–5 years. The price comparison is the easy part.

For commercial buyers managing one or many MPANs, often alongside an existing or planned on-site generation or storage strategy.

Why use KMM for business energy procurement instead of a comparison site?

Short answer. Because the cheapest contract today is rarely the cheapest contract for your business over the term. Tariff structure, half-hourly pricing exposure, export remuneration, contract length, supplier credit risk and integration with on-site generation all matter — and a comparison site doesn't see any of it. Ian works as an independent procurement consultant on each engagement.

The longer answer

A typical commercial energy procurement engagement at KMM looks like this: we pull your MPAN data, model your demand against the half-hourly market, evaluate your existing or planned solar / battery integration, screen the supplier market, run a closed tender, and present the options with the trade-offs explained. Ian then works alongside you through the contract negotiation.

The KMM position is consultancy — independent of supplier commission structures where possible, transparent where commissions exist (some routes still pay supplier commission and we tell you when), and aligned with your wider energy strategy rather than a single switch event.

Who uses KMM energy procurement

  • Multi-site care home groups. Care homes have predictable continuous demand profiles. Aggregating MPANs across a 4–20 home group materially improves contract pricing leverage. KMM has structured care-group buying arrangements that combine procurement with on-site solar where suitable.
  • Breweries and food & drink manufacturers. High continuous daytime load + the option to add on-site solar / battery means procurement strategy needs to flex around the generation profile, not vice versa. KMM works with independent UK breweries on integrated procurement + generation strategy.
  • Multi-site retail. Many small MPANs aggregated under a single supplier covenant. The procurement game is volume + contract structure, not headline kWh price.
  • Industrial sites with on-site generation. Export strategy, time-of-use exposure and grid-service participation matter as much as import price.
  • Public sector and trusts. Procurement frameworks (Crown Commercial Service, NHS Supply Chain, MAT energy brokers) interact with on-site solar economics — KMM advises on the integration without trying to replace the framework.

LED and energy efficiency — paired with procurement, not as a separate sell

KMM offers LED lighting and energy-efficiency consultancy under the same umbrella, because demand reduction always improves procurement economics. Where a site has ageing fluorescent lighting, badly-sized HVAC controls, or no metering granularity, fixing those things often delivers a faster payback than chasing a marginally better tariff. We work through a demand-reduction list before recommending a procurement strategy on most engagements.

Export optimisation

Sites with on-site generation have two energy contracts to manage: import and export. UK Smart Export Guarantee rates vary widely (low single-digit p/kWh on basic supplier tariffs through to materially higher on Octopus Outgoing-style fixed rates). KMM monitors the export tariff landscape quarterly and re-evaluates client export contracts at renewal — most commercial clients have under-optimised export contracts because the install team that fitted the system didn't take on the procurement side.

Meter aggregation and HH metering

For multi-site clients, MPAN aggregation under a single supplier covenant materially improves contract leverage. We map your portfolio of MPANs, check half-hourly metering status, and aggregate where it makes sense. Some sites benefit from upgrading profile-class metering to half-hourly to access better tariff structures — we advise on whether the upgrade pays back.
