Commercial Solar — Designed Around Your Site, Not a Brochure

KMM is an energy consultancy specialising in helping homes, farms and businesses build their own power stations using the least amount of capital while achieving the highest possible return on investment.

For commercial clients sizing roof or ground-mount PV from 50 kWp upward, often combined with battery storage, private wire arrangements or DNO export consultancy.

For commercial clients that means a bespoke consultancy approach — not off-the-shelf systems quoted against a price-per-kWp spreadsheet. Every project starts with half-hourly demand data, a CAA-certified drone survey, and a sober conversation about what your site actually needs — and what it doesn't.

Is commercial solar worth it for my business?

Short answer. Probably yes — but the honest answer depends on your demand curve, daytime load, electricity tariff, roof / land availability, DNO capacity, and how you fund the capex. KMM models these against your actual half-hourly data before recommending a system size or projecting any payback.

The longer answer

Commercial solar pays back fastest when your operations run during daylight hours, you have a steady or high daytime electricity demand, you own or have a long lease on a suitable roof / site, and your electricity tariff is materially above wholesale market rates.

What KMM won't do is give you a fixed payback figure without seeing your HH data. UK commercial paybacks in 2026 currently fall in a wide band depending on tariff, self-consumption, grant routes and funding model. Anyone promising you a single number from a brochure is selling, not advising.

Who commercial solar makes sense for

The KMM consultancy works across UK commercial sectors. We're sector-agnostic on technology choice — what matters is the demand curve, the site geometry, and the funding context, not the vertical. Recent KMM commercial work includes:

  • Healthcare — GP practices, dental surgeries, private clinics. Daytime electrical load is high (lighting, sterilisers, IT, HVAC), and many practices fund through Salix-equivalent finance. KMM has installed a notable GP practice rooftop + Aelio battery project (see Battery Storage page) showing how clinical sites benefit from time-of-use tariff strategy.
  • Breweries, distilleries and food & drink manufacturers. Mash tuns, conditioning tanks, refrigeration and packing lines run continuously through daylight hours — strong self-consumption ratios. We've worked with independent UK breweries pairing roof PV with battery for evening conditioning load.
  • Large agricultural sites. Multi-shed roof areas, ground-mount alongside grazing, irrigation pumps, grain dryers, dairy parlours. KMM commonly works on farm projects above 200 kWp combining PV with private wire arrangements between buildings.
  • Care homes & multi-site healthcare groups. Continuous load profile (heating, hot water, lifts, lighting), often funded through public-sector-equivalent routes. KMM has scoped multi-site rollouts across regional care groups.
  • Industrial and manufacturing SMEs. Roof PV plus heat-recovery / process-load shifting opportunities. Often qualify for Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) tax relief on the solar spend.

What's actually in a KMM commercial proposal

A KMM commercial proposal lays out what every line of capex covers. Specifically:

  • Bespoke system design documented in full — panels, inverter, battery and programme — after your Fully Funded Electrical & Structural Survey.
  • Site-specific engineering — structural capacity sign-off, DNO G99 application route, export configuration, cable runs and DC string design.
  • Modelled generation from your actual roof geometry — not a regional average — and the assumptions that drive it (PVGIS irradiance dataset, soiling factor, shading model).
  • Tariff and self-consumption modelling against your HH data, with sensitivity analysis on grid import and export prices.
  • Funding routes — capex vs PPA vs asset finance, Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) relief, and grant or Salix eligibility checks where applicable.
  • Operational considerations — realistic maintenance expectations (inspection regime, inverter replacement provision, cleaning frequency), monitoring access, fault response.

Nationwide DNO and grid consultancy

KMM operates nationally on grid connection matters even where the install crew is regional. Every commercial install above 16A per phase requires a G99 application to the local DNO. Export limitation via G100 is increasingly common as DNO capacity tightens on UK feeders. KMM handles every G99 submission as part of the project — including the design pack, single-line diagram, and export-limit certification — across NGED (formerly Western Power Distribution), UK Power Networks, SP Energy Networks and SSEN territories.

Where reinforcement contributions are likely, KMM models them into the funding case before you sign. Where private wire arrangements (between adjacent buildings on a single landowner's site) avoid DNO reinforcement entirely, we design for that instead. Cluster and private-wire arrangements are an under-used tool on agricultural and multi-tenant industrial sites — KMM treats them as a first-line option, not a workaround.

Honest finance modelling

KMM is not a PPA developer. Our default position is capex purchase with Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) relief modelled — typically the strongest TCO outcome for UK corporation tax payers. We model PPA, asset finance, lease and grant-backed capex side-by-side and let the maths drive the recommendation. Where PPA genuinely wins (rare, but happens — e.g. for non-tax-paying charities), we'll say so. Where capex with asset finance wins, we'll say that too. We don't have a commission incentive on either route.

⚙ How we work

Bespoke design, not a template

KMM is a consultancy that installs — not a sales team that installs. The same 6-stage process runs on every commercial enquiry, whether you're sizing a 50 kWp roof or evaluating a 1.5 MWp ground-mount.

01

Half-hourly data audit

We pull 12 months of HH consumption data from your supplier and overlay sector benchmarks. This isn't an estimate — it's your actual demand curve.

02

Drone roof survey

12-minute roof capture by drone. The output is a 3D model with shading analysis, structural baseline and exact panel layout — not a guess from Google Earth.

03

DNO capacity check

We model G99 / G100 against your local network — NGED, UK Power Networks, SP Energy Networks, SSEN — and check whether reinforcement contributions are likely.

04

Bespoke system design

Panel layout, inverter sizing, DC string design, battery integration, tariff modelling and export configuration — all matched to your demand profile, not a template.

05

Financial modelling

Capex with £1m Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) relief calculated, asset finance routes (Barclays Green Cashback, Nationwide Green Additional Borrowing, traditional 1-15yr asset finance) modelled side-by-side, grant routes mapped, sensitivity analysis on tariff assumptions. We show the maths.

06

Bound-in proposal
