The short answer
For solar PV in 2026, LFP is the right answer in almost every case. It is safer, longer-lasting and uses fewer ethically problematic materials than NMC. The only reason to choose NMC for solar is space-constrained installations where the higher energy density per litre actually matters.

Why LFP wins for home solar
The 2022-2023 transition of every reputable home battery brand (GivEnergy, BYD, Tesla Powerwall 3, Sungrow) to LFP chemistry was driven by the safety data. LFP batteries do not enter thermal runaway under normal operating conditions, are far more tolerant of partial-charge cycling (typical for solar use), and last 2-3× as many cycles before noticeable capacity loss.
Where NMC still wins
Electric vehicles, e-bikes and aviation — where energy per kg or per litre matters more than longevity. Tesla's original Powerwall 1 and Powerwall 2 used NMC; the Powerwall 3 has shifted to LFP. Most EVs in 2026 still use NMC for the energy density.
