Solar Panel Removal & Decommissioning UK
Professional solar panel removal, decommissioning and reinstall for UK homes and businesses. Roof works, building demolition, system replacement and end-of-life panel recycling.
When solar panel removal is needed
Most solar panels installed in the UK in the FIT-era (2010-2019) are now reaching the point where building work, roof replacement, system upgrade or — occasionally — outright decommissioning makes panel removal necessary. KMM provides safe, MCS-aligned removal and either temporary off-site storage and reinstall, or full decommissioning with end-of-life recycling.
Common removal scenarios
- Roof replacement — panels removed, roof recovered, panels reinstalled (4-8 weeks total)
- House sale — buyer wants panels removed (rare but happens)
- System upgrade — old 250-300W panels replaced with current 430-460W tier-1 modules; old inverter replaced with hybrid
- Extension or building works — panels temporarily moved while building works happen, then reinstalled
- End-of-life recycling — system more than 25 years old with significant degradation; recycle and replace

End-of-life recycling
KMM recycles end-of-life panels through the PV Cycle UK take-back scheme — the official UK panel recycling programme operated under the WEEE Directive. Aluminium frame, copper wiring, silicon cells and glass are all recoverable. Around 95% of a typical PV panel can be recycled. The take-back is free for our customers; we include collection and recycling cost in the removal quote.
Common gotchas during removal
- Brittle frames — older panels (pre-2014) have less robust frames; we use additional clamps to support during removal
- Roof tile damage — almost always some tile damage; we replace at our cost as part of the job
- MC4 connector seizure — connectors from 2010-2014 era frequently fail when separating; we use proper crimp tooling and replace seals
- Asbestos roofs — many older industrial buildings have asbestos-cement roofs. Specific procedures apply; we work with a licensed asbestos contractor for any disturbance
Reinstall checklist
- Photograph the existing array before removal (layout reference)
- Label each panel with its original string position
- Inspect MC4 connectors for damage; replace any failed ones during reinstall
- Inspect mounting rails for corrosion; replace if needed
- Reinstall to same string layout; re-commission with system test
- Update MCS / G99 records if any system specification changed
