Solar Inverter Replacement Cost UK 2026

Inverter replacement is the biggest single recurring cost across a solar system's 25-year life. Here is what it actually costs in 2026 and how we handle it.

Inverter replacement costs in 2026

Replacing a domestic solar inverter in 2026 costs £1,300-£2,400 fitted depending on size and whether the replacement is like-for-like (string-to-string) or an upgrade (string-to-hybrid). Most string inverters last 10-12 years; hybrid inverters slightly less.

When to replace, when to repair

Most inverter faults under warranty are repaired by the manufacturer's RMA process — we coordinate that for you. Common warrantied issues: communications card failure, isolated component failures, firmware-recoverable problems. Out-of-warranty repair is usually not economic above 8 years of age.

Upgrade or like-for-like?

For most domestic systems coming up for replacement in 2026, we recommend upgrading to a hybrid inverter even if you have no immediate battery plans. The £400-£700 premium pays back if you ever add a battery within the next 5 years. Hybrid inverters also have better warranty coverage and better firmware support.

FAQs

How do I know my inverter is failing?
Watch for: alarm codes on the inverter display, error messages in the monitoring app, generation noticeably below expected, RCD tripping. Most failures are gradual — KMM service customers get an automated alert when generation drops below threshold.
Will I need a new MCS certificate?
For a like-for-like inverter replacement, no — your original MCS certificate stands. For an upgrade (e.g. adding a battery via new hybrid inverter), an MCS certificate update may be needed for SEG eligibility — we handle this.
