Which inverter type pays back better in 2026 — a string inverter or a hybrid? The answer depends on whether you plan to add batteries, your roof shading and your budget.

If you plan to add a battery now or within the next 5 years, fit a hybrid inverter. If you have no battery plans and a simple unshaded roof, a string inverter is £400-£700 cheaper and delivers almost identical generation.

When to choose string

  • You have no plans for batteries within 5 years and your usage pattern means batteries do not pay back (e.g. EV-tariff household time-shifting grid power already)
  • You have a simple, unshaded, south-facing roof where a string inverter performs optimally
  • You are upgrading an existing solar system that already has a string inverter and just need a like-for-like replacement

When to choose hybrid

  • Battery is in the plan — even if not now, within 5 years
  • You want grid-outage backup (EPS) — only possible with hybrid + correct battery
  • Your roof has any shading or split orientations — hybrid inverters with multiple MPPT inputs handle this better
  • You want a single warranty contact for the whole system

FAQs

Can I upgrade a string inverter to hybrid later?
Yes, but it costs the full price of a new inverter plus install labour — typically £1,400-£2,000 fitted. Better to fit hybrid from day one if there is any battery prospect.
What about micro-inverters?
Different category — micro-inverters live on each panel. Higher cost (~£40 per panel premium) but better shading tolerance. Only worth it on roofs with significant complex shading. For most roofs string or hybrid is the right choice.
