MCS vs Non-MCS Solar Installers: What It Means For You

Why MCS certification matters more than you think for domestic solar — and why it matters less for commercial G99 projects.

What MCS certification is

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is a UK industry-led quality framework for small-scale renewable installations. An MCS-certified installer demonstrates compliance with a defined quality standard, and the certificate issued at end of install is the document required by every UK electricity supplier to register a domestic system on the Smart Export Guarantee.

When MCS matters

For domestic solar PV in the UK, MCS certification is functionally required. Without an MCS certificate, you cannot register for SEG, which means you cannot sell exported kWh back to the grid — losing up to £350/year of income. Most funding routes, such as regional grants and Salix loans, also expect MCS-certified installers.

When MCS does not matter

For commercial solar above 50kVA on a G99 application, MCS is not required. The Distribution Network Operator processes the application directly, and there is no consumer-protection registration required because the customer is a business. KMM commercial installs follow MCS-style engineering standards but do not require the MCS paperwork.

KMM's MCS arrangement

KMM partners with MCS-certified installation engineers for every domestic project. We design and project-manage; the MCS-certified contractor signs off the install and issues the certificate. Customers see one company, one contract and one named project manager — the MCS arrangement is a back-office detail.

Verify any installer's MCS status

The MCS public register at mcscertified.com lists every certified installer. Look up the company name before signing a contract. A non-certified installer offering MCS certification on the back of a partnership should be willing to disclose who the certifying contractor is.
