Drone Solar Surveys: What to Expect on Survey Day

What actually happens on a drone solar survey day — 30 minutes to 2 hours on site, depending on roof complexity. Photos, noise level, neighbour notification.

Before the day

We book the survey at a time that suits you, weather-permitting (rain, wind above 15mph and dense fog reschedule us). We send you a short email confirming the visit time, the surveyor's name and what we need from you (any restrictions on access, any privacy preferences for neighbour notification).

On the day

  1. Arrival (0-10 min): Surveyor arrives, introduces themselves, brief safety chat with you, walks the property perimeter.
  2. Notification (10-15 min): For terraced and semi-detached, we knock on immediate neighbours' doors as a courtesy and let them know we will be operating a drone for 30-45 minutes.
  3. Drone capture (15-45 min): The drone flies a programmed grid pattern over your roof and surrounding area at 25-40m altitude. The noise is roughly equivalent to a distant lawnmower — most people don't even notice it.
  4. Ground photos (45-60 min): Surveyor takes ground-level reference photos of your consumer unit, your incoming supply, your meter location, and any internal cabling routes.
  5. Brief discussion (60-75 min): Quick chat about your goals, your bills and any immediate questions. We can usually give you a high-level system size verdict before we leave.

After the day

Within 48 hours: a 3D model of your roof, panel layout drawings, shading report, and our written ROI cash model. Within 5 working days: a bound proposal with finance options and contract terms. No pressure to proceed.

What to do during the survey

Nothing — carry on as normal. We do not need access to your roof, your loft, or anywhere private. We just need to fly over your roof and have a brief look at your meter and consumer unit. Pets and children are fine, the drone makes very little noise from inside the house.
