The Tesla Powerwall 3 in 2026

The Tesla Powerwall 3 launched in late 2024 with a major specification upgrade over the Powerwall 2 — 13.5 kWh usable capacity, integrated solar inverter accepting up to 20kWp DC, native 11.04 kW continuous AC output, full LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery chemistry, and bidirectional grid-services compatibility (Tesla Energy Plan eligibility). It is now Tesla's only home battery sold in the UK.

Why Powerwall over alternatives

  • Powerwall 3 vs GivEnergy All-in-One: Powerwall 3 has higher continuous power (11kW vs 6kW) — better for whole-home EPS during outages. GivEnergy is cheaper.
  • Powerwall 3 vs SolaX Triple Power: Powerwall 3 has the brand recognition and Tesla Energy Plan eligibility. SolaX is modular (3.3 kWh per module) and easier to right-size.
  • Powerwall 3 vs BYD Battery-Box: Powerwall is fully integrated (inverter + battery in one unit). BYD requires a separate inverter.

Tesla Energy Plan

Powerwall 3 owners can enrol in Octopus Energy's Tesla Energy Plan, which pays a flat 8p/kWh all-day import rate in exchange for Tesla's access to your battery for grid-balancing services. For households with high overnight EV charging plus daytime solar, this can be the single most lucrative tariff combination on the UK market.

Frequently asked Powerwall questions

Can I get Powerwall without solar?
Yes — Powerwall 3 works as a standalone battery on a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Cosy or Intelligent Octopus Go. Charge from 7p/kWh overnight; discharge during 28p+ peak. Typical 6-8 year payback on battery-only installs.
How many Powerwalls can I stack?
Up to 4 Powerwall 3 units per inverter, giving 54 kWh total. Most domestic stacks are 1-2 units. Larger commercial installs (multi-stack) are typically more economical with Sungrow or BYD commercial battery systems.
Will Powerwall work in a power cut?
With the optional Backup Gateway 3 (£900 fitted), yes — Powerwall powers your whole home automatically during a grid outage, with seamless transition (no flicker). Without the Gateway, no EPS function.
What about Powerwall 2 owners?
Powerwall 2 (NMC chemistry, 13.5 kWh) is end-of-life for new sales but is still under Tesla warranty for existing owners. We service Powerwall 2 installs as part of our maintenance plans.
