The KMM story — built by surveyors, not by salespeople

How Steve Moran and Kieren Myler built KMM Energy Solutions — the family-business story of two surveyors who left the UK's largest installer to build something honest.

Where it started

Steve Moran and Kieren Myler met at Project Solar UK in 2019, then the largest domestic solar installer in Britain. Steve was a senior commercial surveyor with a decade in renewables behind him — much of it in Australia, where solar had been mainstream half a decade ahead of the UK. Kieren ran the residential surveying team for the Midlands region. They worked together on hundreds of installations and built a reputation for refusing to over-promise: if solar did not pay back, they said so.

Customers liked it. Sales managers, less so.

The decision in 2022

By the summer of 2022 both had reached the same conclusion. The largest UK installers were optimised for high sales velocity, not for engineering quality. They were happy to quote 18-year paybacks dressed up as 11-year paybacks. They were happy to sell 13.5 kWh batteries to homes that needed 5 kWh. And they were happy to leave customers waiting six weeks for a phone call from a project manager they had never met.

So they left.

January 2023 — KMM Energy Solutions incorporated

KMM Energy Solutions was incorporated in 2023 (Companies House #14611429) — backed by 30+ years combined founder industry experience in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. Companies House #14611429. The founding premise was simple: do the engineering properly, quote what actually pays back, and assign one named project manager per customer.

The premise has not changed

Three years later, the way KMM works is exactly as Steve and Kieren originally specified.

  • Every survey starts with a drone capture. No ladders, no scaffold for surveying. 3D model inside 48 hours.
  • Every quote ships with the four assumptions disclosed — self-consumption, import tariff, electricity inflation, tax position.
  • Every commercial proposal models CAPEX, asset finance and PPA side-by-side, with the introducer commission published on each.
  • Every customer gets a single named project manager. The same person you speak to in week one is the one chasing your panel delivery on install day.
  • Every install plants a tree with the Woodland Trust. A small but durable offset of the embodied carbon in the panels.

The bee

The KMM logo is a hand-drawn bee. The bee made sense because we take the sting out of your energy bills. It made sense because bees are productive without making a fuss. And it made sense because we did not want a logo that looked like every other solar installer's identikit sun-rays-and-circles brand mark. Steve commissioned a freelance illustrator in late 2022 to draw it. We have used the same illustration ever since.

What KMM is today

  • 34 specialist staff (team + installer network) — surveyors, planners, energy brokers, an installs manager, grid applications, marketing
  • 5,000+ installations across our team and installer network between the founders, across Australia and the UK
  • Service area: 80 miles from Newark for commercial, slightly tighter for domestic
  • Trustpilot reviews maintained at 4.9+ stars across multiple pages
  • Members of MCS, NICEIC, NAPIT, RECC, TrustMark, IWA, Trading Standards
  • Partnership with the Woodland Trust — every install plants a tree

What KMM is not

  • We are not a call centre. We have a landline (0115 647 3822) and an SMS line (07426 926 416), both answered by the same small team.
  • We are not a national franchise. Every install is run from Newark; no "preferred partner" hand-offs.
  • We are not VC-backed or PE-backed. The two founders own 100% of the company. Future generations will own it.
  • We are not the cheapest. We are not the most expensive. We are the most honest about what the system will actually do for you.

The 2035 mission

Steve and Kieren's stated mission for KMM is to help 1 million UK homes and businesses transition to solar by 2035. The maths is intentionally ambitious — there are around 30 million UK households and 5.5 million UK SMEs. Hitting 1 million of them is roughly 3% of the addressable market. It is meant as a north star, not a forecast.
